12 ArtLab interns were selected through an application process for the
spring ArtLab II program. Over 3 months, interns had several unique
experiences including working with Creative Resident Lisa Micho to create papier-mâché tableaus exploring contemporary social issues,
field trips to galleries, and other mixed-media projects. They
culminated their internships with a special project called “Freedom to
be…heard.” Interns researched current hot topics related to issues of
Freedom and engaged students within their own schools and communities
to create 6x8 inch cards in mixed-media. Each card reflected an
interpretation of personal or global freedom issues and participants
ranged in age from 5-20 years of age. In all, 658 cards were exhibited
on the walls of PlatteForum for the opening celebration on May 25,
2006. Additionally, interns armed with video-cameras hit the streets
of Denver to interview random people on what Freedom meant to them.
The resulting footage was edited into a diverse collection of opinions
and projected at the opening event.
