From The Outside In: Collaboration with patients at
The Children’s Hospital
Emily vonSwearingen, Associate Director for PlatteForum,
was selected as an Artist in Residence for VSAarts
of Colorado. As the former Artist in Residence for
The Children’s Hospital in Denver, is was a
natural choice to return there and collaborate with
teenage patients in the Dialysis Clinic, Neuro-Oncology
Clinic and the Psychiatric Department for this exhibition
entitled “From The Outside In”. This body
of work is an exploration through photography and
text into the lives of teenagers, offering glimpses
of their world both as a patient while in the hospital
and in their home lives. Teenagers were taught how
to use digital cameras to document certain aspects
of their lives. The resulting images were converted
into black and white images and embedded with their
words culled from conversations about their photographs.
This project was born by the curiosity of exploring
what the world looks like to someone who is a patient
and often tethered to medical equipment or reliant
on medications. What are the hopes and dreams of such
courageous young people as they battle their illnesses
on a daily basis ? Insight was often found through
looking at the photographs, delving into their hidden
meanings and finding a new avenue for self-expression.
The exhibit consisted on 42 black/white 16x20 framed
photographs and was made possible through unique collaboration
with PlatteFourm, Very Special Arts of Colorado, and
the Children’s Hospital - enabling this exhibition
to be viewed at each venue.
