Upcoming Creative Residencies

Feb 14 – March 25:
“Mile High Stories”, digital story telling with Tim Roessler, Hugh Graham and Daniel Weinshenkler. This artist-team will create personal narratives or mini-documentaries, lasting 2-3 minutes each, of greater Denver’s residents, targeting diverse communities. Additionally, the digital stories created through their workshops with youth will be looped with their work as a gallery installation and published through a website.

March 28 – April 23:
Jake Adam York, poet, “A Map of Denver.” Over the past several months, Jake has been working on a long poem that records his journeys “through space and time through the city, creating a mental map collaborating with writers and students at UCD. He will use his PlatteForum residency as a “benchmark” for mapping the Platte River Valley. The goal is to create a personal “map” over 40 pages long. The conclusion of the residency would be a “Progressive Reading”– taking place over a series of locations and ending via a “trail” at PlatteForum, where visual poems, created by Jake, youth and the community, will be written and projected on the walls.

May 1 – June 10:
Vincent Comparetto, will create a sound installation – digital animation comprised of a “labyrinth” of hanging speakers with various audio tracks. The speakers will each be lit by a low wattage light source and hung at varying heights. Tracks of music and mixed soundscapes interspersed with audio from recordings with children will be integrated into the piece. The youths’ work interprets their dreams through sound and animation.

PlatteForum News

December 1, 2004

Greetings!

As 2004 draws to a close we are actively working and planning on new exciting happenings at PlatteForum. We surpassed our 2nd birthday on October 1st and will start working with our 12th Creative Resident! – mixed media installation artist Susan Meyer next week.

Emily vonSwearingen, Associate Director, has been selected as an Artist in Residence for Very Special Arts of Colorado and will be working on a collaborative project with The Children’s Hospital. She will be working with patients from Dialysis, Neuro-Oncology, Oncology/Hematology, Eating Disorders and Cystic Fibrosis Clinics in November and December to create a photo based mixed-media exhibition to be exhibited at 3 venues in 2005 – The Childrens’s Hospital in March, Very Special Arts in May and the PlatteForum in July as part of our summer programming series. We are thrilled to be collaborating with such remarkable organizations.

We are pleased to start a new project in February with Brown Elementary as part of a new outreach program. We will be working with youth to create tile mural panels to be installed in the school as a launch to their new International Baccalaureate program. In April we will be working with Remington Elementary on a similar project to be installed at their site.

Susan Meyer is in residence November 29 - January 21. We welcome you to pop in during her studio time to see her work in progress. She will start a workshop series with high school students from PS 1 Charter School in mid-January. Please join us for her opening on January 21 and for the youth workshop closing event on February 10.

How do we accomplish what we do at PlatteForum? It is because of generous sponsors, volunteers, fellow artists and special collaborations. We welcome recent contributors:

(Sponsors) Denver Foundation, Albert Dolan, DPS Foundation, Riverfront Park Community Foundation, Xcel Energy Foundation. (In-Kind) Brasserie Rouge, Chipotle/32nd and Lowell, IZZE Beverage, Kirk Norlin Digital Imaging, Noodles & Company, Paradise Bakery, Zengo. And a special thank you to our wonderful Board of Directors and the voters who renewed SCFD! Bravo!

We wish you and yours a happy and safe holiday and thank everyone for the many efforts that go into making PlatteForum shine!
