Greetings!
2005 is off to a fabulous start. We just finished with the creative residency of digital storytelling team, Daniel Weinshenker, Hugh Graham, and Tim Roessler. The March 18 opening showcased their digital films created in residence, along with the work of middle school students from PS 1 Charter school. We had a successful turnout and many people from the public recorded their own audio narrative loops in the digital storytelling booth !
Next week we begin the creative residency of poet Jake Adam York. There will be two big events in conjunction with his residency during National Poetry Month. April 18 join us at 7:30 for an event at the Tattered Cover Lodo for an evening of poetry read by such Denver notables as Mayor John Hickenlooper, Denver Film Society Artistic Director Ron Henderson, filmmaker and host of Black Radio Days donnie l. betts and Executive Director of the Lab Adam Lerner, to name but a few… Also, on April 23, there will be an all day poetry event designed and facilitated by Jake occurring in different neighborhoods in Denver and culminating via a “map” at the PlatteFourm. Jake will also be working with youth from North High School , PS 1 at the SPOT and ArtLab. Check back with our website for upcoming details.
We are thrilled to launch our new ArtLab arts mentoring program in collaboration with ArtStreet and funded in part by the Colorado Council on the Arts. Twelve students were picked through an application and interview process. Students come to the PlatteForum studio every week to engage in hands-on experiences, creating artwork, learning business management skills, exploring new themes and concepts and acting as ambassadors by greeting visitors at openings. Eight of the current students will be selected for the summer session when they will act as workshop co-facilitators for younger students and create a series of mini-digital films on artistic processes. Students are paid a stipend in the spring and hourly wage in the summer.
Emily vonSwearingen, Associate Director, recently completed her Artist in Residency for Very Special Arts of Colorado. She collaborated with patients at The Children’s Hospital in the Dialysis, Neuro-Oncology, and Psychiatric Clinics to create a photo based, text enriched mixed-media exhibition and DVD film loop to be exhibited at The Children’s Hospital - April 1-30, Very Special Arts of Colorado - May 6-28 and the PlatteForum - July 28- August 27, 2005 . It has been a tremendous experience and a true collaboration between exceptional organizations.
Artist Sharon Bankert and PlatteForum Assistant Jennifer Mikkelsen just completed a tile mural panel project at Brown Elementary that will be exhibited at the PlatteForum this summer and then returned to the school for site specific installation. They are gearing up to repeat this great experience with a new group of students at Remington Elementary in April.
How do we accomplish what we do at PlatteForum? It is because of generous sponsors, volunteers, fellow artists, special collaborations and wonderful board of Directors. We thank everyone who helps to make PlatteForum shine and encourage new people to join in our artistic journeys.
