Upcoming Creative Residencies

Feb 14 – March 25:
“Mile High Stories”, digital story telling with Tim Roessler, Hugh Graham and Daniel Weinshenkler. This artist-team will create personal narratives or mini-documentaries, lasting 2-3 minutes each, of greater Denver’s residents, targeting diverse communities. Additionally, the digital stories created through their workshops with youth will be looped with their work as a gallery installation and published through a website.

March 28 – April 23:
Jake Adam York, poet, “A Map of Denver.” Over the past several months, Jake has been working on a long poem that records his journeys “through space and time through the city, creating a mental map collaborating with writers and students at UCD. He will use his PlatteForum residency as a “benchmark” for mapping the Platte River Valley. The goal is to create a personal “map” over 40 pages long. The conclusion of the residency would be a “Progressive Reading”– taking place over a series of locations and ending via a “trail” at PlatteForum, where visual poems, created by Jake, youth and the community, will be written and projected on the walls.

May 1 – June 10:
Vincent Comparetto, will create a sound installation – digital animation comprised of a “labyrinth” of hanging speakers with various audio tracks. The speakers will each be lit by a low wattage light source and hung at varying heights. Tracks of music and mixed soundscapes interspersed with audio from recordings with children will be integrated into the piece. The youths’ work interprets their dreams through sound and animation.

July 12, 2005

Greetings!

We are in the midst of our summer workshops – River Rafting Art Adventures, Art Explosions! and ArtLab summer film intensive. We sold out our summer and have been able to offer scholarships to 65% of our registrations. We are working with youth ages 6-15 from a wide variety of demographics including several groups from Mi Casa, Girls Inc., Denver Metro Partners, CasaStart and Adams County.

Youth in our workshops spend 3 hours at PlatteForum and rotate through several art stations including painting murals on our walls, building the 3-D trash monster installation, working with polymer clays, creating crafts (masks, puzzles, rubbings), enameling tiles and print-making…

The ArtLab mentoring program has graduated 8 of its apprentices into the roles of paid instructors for the summer. They have been working with younger kids, creating a mandala mural wall, building armatures for the trash monsters, learning hands-on art skills and also working with film-maker Scott Slack creating digital films – shooting with digital still and video cameras and editing using Final Cut Pro on Mac G4’s loaned to us by The University of Colorado.

The public is invited to a big, end of the summer showcase event on July 22, 2005 from 4:30-8:30pm to see how PlatteForum has transformed over 6 weeks and to premiere the Artlab films.

August 3-26, 2005 showcases the exhibit “From the Outside In” by Emily vonSwearingen, Associate Director. This body of work was completed through her Artist in Residency at VSAarts Colorado in which she collaborated with patients at The Children’s Hospital in the Dialysis, Neuro-Oncology, and Psychiatric Clinics to create a photo based, text enriched mixed-media exhibition and DVD film loop. The exhibition was made possible through a collaboration with PlatteForum and The Children’s Hospital.

Check back often as we will be undergoing an overhaul of our website in the near future to bring you exciting updates and images of programs and events.
