Cósmica - Carlos Frésquez - Artist Statement
In an
image driven global culture, we are constantly reminded
of our cultural similarities. We are also reminded
of our cultural differences. There are basically four
colors of people on our planet. Black, the seeds from
where we all have come from. White, from the northern
areas of the globe. Yellow, Asiatic tribes from the
east. From the Yellow east to what is called the Americas,
came the Red. This natural tribal traveling took thousands
of years to occur. But just a little over 500 years
ago a conquest took place and changed our planet forever.
The conquest of Mexico brought all the colors together.
The White brought the Black to the Americas. The Red,
already here, coming from the Yellow created a fusion
of all the colors of the planet. This mixing of all
the colors created a new color, Bronze, which becomes
the Cosmic Race.
This recent work begins my interest in hunting and
gathering transcultural images from many sources and
combining them into painted and printed collages.
Appropriated images are collected then superimposed.
All are respected but yet not sacred; anything goes.
Primitive images fuse with the high-tech, fine art
and cartoons, the old and the new. This Meso-Moderno
world enters the ancient future. It’s people
