SANDRA MINTON

Sandra Minton was the Coordinator of the University of Northern Colorado Dance Program from 1972-1998. During this time, she taught a variety of dance movement and theory classes including choreography for dance majors and minors. She has her B.A. and her M.A. from UCLA, and her Ph.D. in Dance and Related Arts from Texas Women’s University. Ms. Minton is a Fulbright scholar known for her efforts in dance research. She has authored articles and textbooks on dance, dance education and choreography. Her interest lies in the connections between movement, visual symbols, and language.

Residency Description

During her residency, Ms. Minton will be working with students to create a dance performance, using the books and stories the kids are already reading in their classes in school. The project is titled “Dancing and Drawing a Story: Experiences with Movement and Visual Literacy.” After researching the stories, she will create a movement-based lesson utilizing visual symbols created by herself and the youth. The students will then create movements by experimenting with elements of space, time, energy and body shape. The project will culminate in a performance that incorporates the visual symbols, one of the movement-based lessons, and a performance of the final dance, accompanied by narration.
