In Residence: February 5 - March 15, 2007

Creative Resident Lauri Lynnxe Murphy celebrated her six-week residency at PlatteForum with a sprawling, site-specific installed painting comprised of hundreds of separately cast and painted pieces.

Lauri's work is caught between sculpture and painting, as she is interested in exploring the concept of installed, site-specific paintings. She has been creating scatter-shot compositions of compartmentalized paintings that are meant to evolve and change with each hanging. Part of the process is creating molds so that she can cast multiples in urethane resin, which are then primed, painted (or otherwise manipulated and embellished), and installed.

During her residency she worked with youth to create a massive, room-sized installed piece consisting of hundreds of components. The youth, teen girls from Colfax Community Network and teens from Escuela Tlatelolco worked side-by-side with Lauri learning her creative process while creating their own forms from plaster. The resulting work and installation is a true collaboration between the artist and participants, where the forms "flow" through the work, creating a river of juxtaposed imagery, color, texture, and form.

About the Artist
Lauri embodies a wonderful sense of community in her work. After spending over ten years as a working artist, she decided that she wanted to help other artists and give back to the community. The end result of this effort is Capsule, which began as a gallery that focused on showing the work of emerging artists, and now has grown to 10 studios, an event center, and a community screen-printing facility that offers membership and classes, and assorted events for emerging artists such as Show-Offs, a First Friday exhibit open to everyone. She has worked with children teaching after-school programs through ArtReach, Young Audiences, the Denver Art Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Denver. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums nationwide including: the Museum of Contemporary Art, Denver, and the Tucson Museum of Contemporary Art. She was the 2005 recipient of Westword's first Mastermind Award for Visual Arts.
